Seasonal and interannual variability of salinity in a large West-African lagoon (Nokoué Lagoon, Benin)

چکیده

Nokoué Lagoon in the South of Benin is a large intermittent coastal water body West Africa, which supports one largest inland fisheries region. The seasonal and interannual variability its salinity was studied, based on 3 years monthly surveys (Dec 2017–Dec 2020). This dataset allows us to identify fine-scale structures better understand salinization/desalinization processes at scales. During rainy season from May November, under influence freshwater inflows rivers northern shores, lagoon desalinizes zero October–November. dry December April, effect ocean tide, becomes progressively saltier, reaching typical salinities ∼25 April. On average, saltier southwestern part fresher towards river's mouths. Vertical stratification beginning main season. displays very marked variation with mean surface (bottom, respectively) 25 (25) April 2018 2020, respectively, against 16 (18) 2019. In absence river inflow data, box model shows that average sensitive small changes (or discharge), observed differences induced by variations 10–15 m3 s−1 during salinization phase, suggests ∼30% seawater entering flood-tides remains trapped enhances salinity. also indicates complete desalinization occurs for greater than ∼50–60 s−1. general mixing time scale 30–40 days.

Seasonal hydrochemical variation in a tropical coastal lagoon (Açu Lagoon, Brazil).

Hydrochemical conditions in the Açu Lagoon are described using spatial and temporal variations of various limnological variables (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, electric conductivity, total alkalinity, carbon dioxide, dissolved and total nutrients (N, P and Si), and chlorophyll a). Collected data was used in order to understand the structure and functioning of an enclosed coastal lagoon s...

Distribution and seasonal variability of trace elements in atmospheric particulate in the Venice Lagoon.

Size distribution and selected element concentrations of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) were investigated in the Venice Lagoon, at three sites characterised by different anthropogenic influence. The PM(10) samples were collected in six size fractions (10-7.2, 7.2-3.0, 3.0-1.5, 1.5-0.95; 0.95-0.49 and <0.49 μm) with high volume cascade impactors, and the concentration of 17 elements (Al, As...

The Seasonal and Interannual Variability

The Labrador Sea, as one of a few places of deep water formation, plays an important role in the Meridional Overturning Circulation. While the interior of the Labrador Sea, where the deepest convection takes place, is known to experience variability on time scales ranging from days to decades, little is known about the variability of the other components of the Labrador Sea circulation the boun...

Aristotle's lagoon

Many modern biologists see anything before Darwin as prehistory: research riddled with misunderstandings and errors. But this view misses an extraordinary range of work over centuries with much of value and insight. So a new look at the biological work of Aristotle, coming from a Greek island almost 2,500 years ago, provides a fresh and fascinating reminder of ancient thinking. A new television...
